-mails to this woman, paula broadwell, a married west point graduate and biographer of david petraeus. >> keep with us. that led to the eventual discovery of a romantic relationship between broadwell and general petraeus, and now general john allen is involved over his correspondence with the original woman, jill kelley. all sounds a little confusing, it is. let's get right to nbc's andrea mitchell who can help us sort it out. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. it is confusing. yet another military general drawn into an fbi investigation that prompted the resignation of cia director david petraeus. marine general john allen replaced david petraeus as commander in afghanistan last year, but allen has now been caught up in the fbi probe that led to petraeus' resignation as cia director. overnight the pentagon announced allen's nomination to be commander of nato has been delayed and the nomination of his successor in afghanistan speeded up. after military officials announced that 20,000 to 30,000 pages of potentially inappropriate e-mails connected allen to jill kelley, the woman who
the letters to paula broadwell and then officials stumbled on others that indicated a relationship between broadwell and petraeus. key members of congress are asking why the fbi did not number them or the president sooner. >> we received no advance notice. it was like a lightning bolt. i mean, this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. >> reporter: officials say the president first learned of the investigation involving his cia director thursday. the intelligence chair's, feinstein and house republican mike rogers were not informed until friday, the day the president accepted petraeus' resignation but house majority leader eric cantor had known for more than a leak, tipped over, officials say, by a disgruntled fbi investigator who alerted republican staff members. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security, and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say the fbi could not inform anyone until they completed their investigation. that
two very different women, tampa socialite jill kelley and petraeus biographer paula broadwell with whom petraeus had a relationship. >> thank you for all that you have done for me and for our precious daughters. >> reporter: marine general john allen is married with a sterling record, but on a flight to australia monday aides to defense secretary leon panetta disclosed a dramatic turn in the case involving allen's predecessor in afghanistan, david petraeus. fbi investigators you be covered what the pentagon called potentially inappropriate communications between general allen and jill kelley whom he and his wife had gotten to know in tampa. they were reviewing between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents, including e-mails over two years. the fbi said some were flirtatious, but the general strongly denies any misconduct, and the fbi found no wrongdoing. still, jay johnson, the pentagon's general counsel, saw a number of the e-mails before advising secretary panetta to refer the matter to the department's inspector general for further investigation. >> nobody should jump to con

being breached in the other camp. >> reporter: meanwhile, paula broadwell remained at her brother's home in washington on wednesday still not talking. but officials a i the investigation was triggered in may when general john allen received an e-mail from an account called kelley patrol. it warned the general to stay away from kelley. general allen forwarded it to her. on the account she shares with her husband scott thinking kelley had sent it as a joke. sources closest to kelley told the general she hadn't sent it but was concerned she was being stalked because the e-mail referred to a meeting that she and general allen scheduled in washington the next week. in june, people close to kelley say she and her husband received as many as four similar e-mails from different accounts telling jill she's up to no good and asking her husband, do you know what your wife is up to when she has dinner with general petraeus? she turned all the e-mails including general allen's over to a veteran fbi agent she knew. eventually investigators say all the anonymous e-mails were tracked back to paula broad
